Things a national park cannot permit
All of it follows from the same fact: this is private land, so the conservancy makes the rules.
Night drives
A spotlight after dinner, and an entirely different set of animals: aardvark, porcupine, genet, civet, white-tailed mongoose, springhare, bushbaby, and leopard which are considerably more relaxed after dark.
National parks in Kenya close to visitors at dusk. This is one of the strongest single arguments for staying in a conservancy anywhere in the country.
Lion tracking on foot
Ol Pejeta’s research team monitors its lions with radio collars, and when it is running, guests can join them on foot.
You walk with the team, following a signal, and the objective is the data rather than a photograph. You will be told exactly where to stand and when to stop. It is the most interesting morning available here and it is a real research operation, not an activity staged for visitors.
Availability varies — it depends on the team, the season and where the lions are. We check when we book rather than promising it.
Guided walks
With an armed guide, generally in areas away from the rhino. Good for understanding the landscape and the smaller things, which a vehicle drives straight past.
The endangered species enclosure
Where the last two northern white rhinos are kept under guard, alongside other animals under intensive protection. Access is managed and limited — see the rhino page.
Game drives
The ordinary ones, and they are good: rhino of both species, lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and Jackson’s hartebeest, with Mount Kenya on the skyline when it is clear — which is mostly early morning.
